Would you like to know how to use a free web-based program to quickly make good-looking Youtube thumbnails?
Recently, I found a website that makes thumbnail creation very easy: canva.com. This is a free, simple graphics editor. One of the things I really like is that there are over a million images you can search through and use. I like to combine a nice photo with some text to make an attractive thumbnail.
Here’s how to do it:
- Create an account on canva.com (or login with Google/Facebook).
- Click ‘Create a Design’ and choose ‘youtube thumbnail’. It may be under a category called ‘social media posts’.

3. Search for an image relevant to your video by typing a word into the search box. I’m using ‘coffee’ for this example.

4. Click on the image to make it your background and adjust the size to fill the blank space.
5. Click ‘Elements -> Shapes’. Select a shape and choose a background color. Then draw those shapes over your chosen image.

6. Click ‘Text’ and add some text.

7. Click ‘Download’ to grab a copy of your newly created thumbnail.
8. Upload your thumbnail to youtube.
